Antibiotics are used in livestock farming for the purpose of preventing and treating infectious diseases… Using antibiotics for the wrong purpose, in the wrong dosage, at the wrong time or as prescribed by a doctor will lead to serious health problems. Drug resistance and drug resistance are not only in livestock but also in humans; affecting food safety and hygiene and consumer health; reducing the competitiveness of livestock products.
Current regulations on the use of veterinary drugs containing antibiotics and prescription of veterinary drugs for terrestrial animals are stipulated in Decree No. 13/2020/ND-CP dated January 21, 2020 of the Government; Circular No. 12/2020/TT-BNNPTNT dated November 9, 2020 and Circular No. 13/2022/TT-BNNPTNT dated September 28, 2022 of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Principles of veterinary drug prescription: When using all veterinary drugs, a prescription is required, except for the following veterinary drugs: Veterinary drugs containing active ingredients belonging to the group of drugs for preventing and treating coccidiosis, including: Decoquinate, Diclazuril, Halofuginone hydrobromide, Lasalocid One sodium, Maduramicin ammonium alpha, Monensin sodium, Narasin, Nicarbazin, Robenidine hydrochloride, Salinomycin sodium, Semduramicin sodium. Veterinary drugs containing antiseptic, antibacterial, and detoxifying active ingredients used in livestock and aquaculture activities. Vaccines and antibodies used in veterinary medicine. Veterinary drugs used to increase resistance and support disease treatment; Herbs and medicinal herbs used in veterinary medicine.
The prescription of veterinary drugs must be based on the results of medical examination or diagnosis and testing; ensuring reasonableness, safety, effectiveness and appropriateness to the severity of the disease. Prescribers may only prescribe veterinary drugs that have been licensed for circulation and use in Vietnam.
Veterinary prescriptions containing narcotics and precursors: Veterinary prescriptions containing narcotics and precursors are made in 3 copies: 1 copy is kept at the facility for medical examination, treatment, surgery, and examination of animals; 1 copy is kept at the livestock facility; 1 copy is kept at the facility that dispenses and sells veterinary drugs. In cases where the prescription is prescribed and sold by a facility for medical examination, treatment, surgery, and testing of animals, the prescription is made in 2 copies: 1 copy is kept at the facility of the prescriber; 1 copy is kept at the livestock facility. Prescribe a quantity of drugs not exceeding 7 days or according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Facilities and individuals that examine, treat, perform surgery, and test animals must make and send a list of signatures of the person prescribing veterinary drugs containing narcotics and precursors to the facility. veterinary management agency at the provincial level in the locality.
Prohibited acts in animal husbandry are: Using banned substances in animal husbandry; Using antibiotics in animal feed that are not veterinary drugs permitted for circulation in Vietnam; Using antibiotics in animal feed for the purpose of stimulating growth.
