According to Mr. Diep, after an extensive period of research, he and his colleagues successfully developed a vaccine against African Swine Fever (ASF), marking a significant breakthrough in controlling this devastating disease. In 2022, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (now the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) approved the use of this vaccine in livestock production. This was the first ASF vaccine to be officially commercialized, making Vietnam the first country in the world to successfully develop a vaccine against this disease.

Previously, there had been no vaccine available to prevent African Swine Fever. The disease caused a major outbreak in 2019, affecting Hai Duong province and other parts of the country, resulting in substantial losses to the pig farming industry.

The ASF vaccine is administered to healthy pigs from four weeks of age and older. Within 2 to 4 weeks after vaccination, pigs develop immunity to the ASF virus. The vaccine provides immunity for a minimum of five months.

Dr. Nguyen Van Diep (born in 1983, from Doan Thuong commune, Gia Loc district) graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Hanoi University of Agriculture (now Vietnam National University of Agriculture) in 2006 and later joined the university as a lecturer. In 2013, he was awarded a full Monbukagakusho scholarship to pursue a PhD in veterinary pathology at Miyazaki University, Japan.
